Generation of Computer

 The First Generation

  • Eniac (Electronic numerical integrator and calculator) was the first geneation of computer
  • Vaccum tubs was the core element in 1st generation computer
  • Eniac used for around 1800 vacuum tubes
  • The time period of 1st Generation of computer was from 1946 to 1958
  • Punched card and paper tape was secondary storage
  • Machine code used for as a programming language
  • Need Ac
  • Some computers of this geneation were -
  1. Edvac
  2. Univac
  3. Ibm -701
  4. Ibm - 650

The Second Generation

  • Transistors was the core element in 2nd generation computer
  • The period of second Generation was from 1959 - 1964
  • Magnetic tape and magnetic disks as secondary devices
  • Supported machine code and assembly language like fortan , cobol were used
  • Need Ac
  • Some computers of this generation were -
  1. Ibm - 1620
  2. Ibm - 7094
  3. Cdc - 1604
  4. Cdc - 3600
  5. Univac 1108

The Third Generation

  • The Period of third generation was from 1965-1971
  • Integrated circuits was the core element in 3rd Generation computer
  • The Ic was invented by jack kilby
  • Supported high-level language (fortan ii to iv , cobel, pascal pi, i, bascic algol-68 etc.)
  • Some computers of this generation were -
  1. Ibm - 360 series
  2. Honywell - 600 series
  3. Pdp ( Personal data processor)
  4. Ibm - 370/168
  5. Tdc - 316

The Forth Generation

  • The Period of 4th Generation was from 1975 - Present
  • Microprocessor was the core element in 4th Generation Computer
  • All the high-level languages like c,  c++, d base etc. were used in this generation.

The Fifth Generation

  • The fifth Generation computer will be able to think and make decisons.
  • Artificial intelligence will the core element in 5th Generation computer
  • They will use language like lisp and prolog
  • This computer will not do just data processing but knowledge processing.
